Pull the circuitboard with the power/USB connectors apart from the circuitboard still attached to the HDD, do NOT take the whole circuitboard off! As was my mistake it seems.Īfter you do so you'll have a normal 3.5" HDD which you can put into your desktop PC to test if it's working (ensure you change the jumper so the HDD is operating in slave mode, another mistake I made. You then need to take off the screws connecting the circuitboard to the cage, you'll need a torx screwdriver for those. Unscrew the four screws keeping the cage in tact (2 either side), then take the cage apart by sliding the top and bottom in opposite directions. I was worried it was going to break but it's really the only way to do it, and they seem to be quite strong!Īfter that, take the wire away from the cage but leave the electrical tape on it. From reading various sources some people recommend a new enclosure, but I'm not that familiar with the anatomy of an external drive so I'm not sure what that is exactly!
I disassembled it and there doesn't appear to be any physical damage from what I can see. It simply doesn't detect it, so I'm hoping it's just a problem with the USB connector. However no computers recognise it, and we've tried multiple cables. My friend bought a Maxtor 3200 320GB external HDD around a year ago, and it had been working fine until recently when his girlfriend plugged the power cable from the laptop into it by mistake! Now the LED just flickers rapidly as though the drive is being accessed, and movement can be heard inside it.
